People, Population Change and Policies, Lessons from the Population Policy Acceptance Study - Volume 1, 2008

Editors: Charlotte Höhn, Dragana Avramov, Irena Kotowska

This two-volume book presents social cohesion and demographic challenges that are associated with low birth rates and population ageing. It does so from the perspective of citizens and key policy actors.

The work analyses peoples' attitudes about demographic trends and expectations towards private networks and public policies. It places these in the societal context of national specificities in fourteen countries and regards them as part of the dynamics of the European integration process.
Volume 1 focuses on research findings related to family issues. Its main topics are: attitudes towards family and family change, value of children, fertility intentions, and views on work-family-balance.

Particular attention is given to the acceptance of and expectations about family policies. Additionally, the reader finds methodological and theoretical chapters and learns about the background of the DIALOG project. The methodological part written by Dragana Avramov and Robert Cliquet provides the reader with a detailed description of opportunities to analyse the Population Policy Acceptance Study database (the database is attached on CD-Rom in Volume 2).

This book is the outcome of the DIALOG research project, funded by the European Commission under 5th Framework Programme.

Integrated Policies on Gender Relations, Ageing and Migration in Europe, 2005

Authors: Dragana Avramov, Robert Cliquet

This book addresses major societal trends associated with changes in gender relations, family-building and patterns of work, ageing, and integration of migrants, which mark Europe at the turn of the 21st century. It builds on the networking of 11 European Population institutes from Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands, and Poland. The Network for integrated European Population Studies (NIEPS) took stock of research carried out at the national level and literature produced in a variety of European languages in view to provide the knowledge-base for integrated population-related policies at the European level.

The European Commission funded this network under the 5th Framework Programme 'Improving the Socio-economic Knowledge Base'.

This monograph capitalizes on the stock-taking of NIEPS and personal research of the authors.

Active ageing in Europe, 2004

Authors: Dragana Avramov and Miroslava Maskova

This volume takes as its starting point the changing age structure in European countries, which is characterised by the increase in the number of elderly persons and the decrease in the young and working populations, and reviews the demographic differences between European countries. Improved living conditions and effective health and social policies mean that the majority of elderly Europeans reach the third age in relatively good health and with a certain security of income. However, whilst the actual retirement age has been declining, only a minority of elderly people use their free time actively.

The different public policy approaches and individual strategies developed in response to these societal changes are examined and wide-ranging policy proposals for the development of active ageing strategies which address issues of employment, health, leisure and social cohesion are made.

People, demography and social exclusion, 2003

Author: Dragana Avramov

New forms of poverty across Europe are affected by the demographic behaviour of individuals exposed to risks of material deprivation and social exclusion and those who have fallent through the safety net of the social welfare systems. To introduce appropriate policy measures, policy makers need accurate information about the demographic factors likely to have an impact on social exclusion, such as patterns of young adults leaving the parental home, household dynamics, couple formation and dissolution, reproductive behaviour, morbidity and mortality of individuals and groups which are either at risk of social exclusion or already excluded from society.

This volume is an international study consisting of an executive summary followed by eight chapters dealing with concepts, data and methods as well as with the different aspects of social disadvantages. It includes numerous tables and graphs, and provides exhaustive information on the relationship between social exclusion and demography.

Démographie et exclusion sociale, 2003

Author: Dragana Avramov

Population and Development, A message from the Cairo Conference, 1995

Authors: Robert Cliquet and Kristiaan Thienpont

Since the onset of modernisation the world population doubled several times and will soon reach six billion of people. The annual rate of increase in the world population is approximately 90 million people. This is the largest absolute level of population growth ever recorded. According to the most recent population projections of the United Nations, the world population will probably double again before stabilising at a stationary level. Ninety percent of the present and future population growth is accounted for by developing countris.

The ICPD dealt with the key issues concerning the interrelations between population, development and environment, and their causes, and was not limited to marginal issues such as abortion, promiscuity and homosexuality as was the impression given in the media as a result of the way these questions were distorted by the actions of religious fundamentalists. The ICPD Action Programme forms an impressive charter with a broad range of relevant policy recommendations. Nevertheless, compared to most of the current scientific literature, the ICPD seems to underestimate the seriousness and urgency of the issues at stake.

The future of Europe's population, 1993

Author: Robert Cliquet

A precice prediction of the demographic future of Europe is not possible. The comparative analysis of alternative scenarios can nevertheless help to assess the impact of (certain) policies in an uncertain future by using variables such as fertility, mortality, migration.

This work is the result of a collaborative study by a team of experienced demographers carried out under the guideance of Professor Robert Cliquet, governmental representative of Belgium in the European Population Committee and Director of the Population and Family Study Centre in the Ministry of the Flemish Community, Brussels. The scenario analyses were produced by the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis, Laxendurn, Austria.

Coping with Homelessness: Issues to be Tackled and Best Practices in Europe, 1999

Edited by: Dr. Dragana Avramov

This book is the outcome of a study funded by the European Commission carried out by several European research organizations. The project has documented that proven, potentially feasible methodologies are available but that there is weak underlying data, insufficient inter-institutional linkages and imperfect mechanisms to harness that expertise. The expert group has developed methodological recommendations, identified methodological requirements and proposed the necessary steps and accompanying measures in order to carry out pertinent policy oriented research about homelessness. Integrated policy models developed in Denmark and Finland are preventing homelessness and assisting homeless people. It is acknowledged, however, that even in these countries people with multiple problems fall through the system of standard social protection. The book brings together state of the art research and service provision for homeless people in the European Union. It aims to promote informed policies and measures to prevent homelessness and assist homeless people.

The invisible hand of the housing market, 1996

Author: Dragana Avramov

The author studies the relationship between housing insecurity and homelessness. She focuses on the vulnerable position of people who lack personal resources to access home ownership and who are denied access to publicly funded or subsidized housing. An analysis of factors which are contributing to the legal and financial precariousness of people who are subject to eviction procedures is the basis for the identification of examples of bad and good policies and practice in reducing risks of homelessness.

La main invisible du marché du logement, 1996

Author: Dragana Avramov

Homelessness in the European Union, 1995

Author: Dragana Avramov

The author analyses juridical instruments delimiting the right to housing and access to adequate housing for low income groups in the European Union. She focuses on the relationship between the statement of intent expressed in international standard-setting documents of the United Nations, Council of Europe, European Union, and in the national constitutions, and establishment of the right and access to the right.

The author estimates the extent of homelessness and bad housing in the European Union and highlights characteristics of people who depend on public and voluntary services for homeless people. THe social context of housing excusion which affects homeless and badly housed people is provided through the analysis of socio-demographic processess and expected changes in households, housing supply, poverty levels, income insufficiency, traumatic events and personality characteristics conductive to housing and social exclusion.

The impact of value systems on the perception of homelessness and the analysis of the functional basis of social solidarity provide the theoretical framework.

Her analysis is based on the research work carried out by FEANTSA's network of national correspondents in each Member State of the European Union.

Les sans-abri dans l'Union européenne, 1995

Author: Dragana Avramov

Authors: Robert Cliquet and Kristiaan Thienpont

In-group/out-group behaviour in modern societies, 1999

Authors: Kristiaan Thienpont and Robert Cliquet

This volume presents a selection of papers dealing with ingroup-outgroup relations. It offers explanations of conflicts between groups, of the often uneasy balance in ethnic relations and of the way individual behaviour is determined by an ingroup/outgroup context individuals find themselves in or percieve themselves to be in. The explanatory frameworks all rely on evolutionary biology in general or sociobiology in particular.

This book emerged from the 20th annual meeting of the European Sociobiology Society (ESS) which was held from 7 to 9 July 1997.
